Happy Lance Brunious is an American showman and multi-disciplinary artist bridging storied New Orleans jazz traditions with the Twin Cities music community. He delivers a unique experience blending thirteen artistic attributes—from jazz trumpet and scatting to storytelling, magic, and theatre. With over 2,000 North American performances, he carries a legacy tied to the pioneers of early jazz.
A New Orleans native, Happy Lance is the son of Wendell Brunious, musical director at Preservation Hall, and grandson of Juilliard graduate John “Pickey” Brunious, who arranged for early jazz icons. His ancestry traces back to late great-great-uncle Willie Santiago, a contemporary of Buddy Bolden and one of the first banjo players ever recorded. Since 2018, Happy Lance and his band have channeled their deep lineage into a vibrant repertoire of traditional jazz, Mardi Gras anthems, and old Creole tunes. They were the headliner for such events as St. Paul’s 2022 Juneteenth celebration and TC Veg Fest 2023 on Harriet Island. In 2024, Lance performed with Mr. Benny Jones and the world-renowned Treme Brass Band at d.b.a. New Orleans on Frenchmen Street.
For several years, Happy Lance and his band have appeared regularly at Krewe Restaurant in St. Joseph—an upscale venue with authentic New Orleans Creole cuisine—where they preserve an essential American legacy. As an ambassador of New Orleans music, history, and culture in the North, Happy Lance continues sharing this enduring heritage with audiences worldwide.
